Electrical Stimulation Therapy (E-Stim)
Electrical Stimulation Therapy (E-Stim) is a therapeutic modality used at North Bay Spine and Rehab to help reduce pain, relax tight muscles, and support the body’s natural healing process. It is commonly used for patients experiencing chronic pain, acute injuries, muscle spasms, or muscle weakness.
During treatment, small adhesive pads are placed on the skin near the affected area. These pads deliver gentle electrical pulses that stimulate the nerves and muscles beneath the skin. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild tingling or pulsing feeling, and treatments are typically very comfortable and relaxing.
E-Stim works by mimicking the signals your nervous system naturally sends to your muscles. These electrical impulses cause the muscles to contract and relax rhythmically, which helps improve circulation and stimulate healing in the injured tissue.
Benefits of Electrical Stimulation
Electrical stimulation can support recovery and improve function by:
-
Reducing pain signals sent to the brain
-
Relaxing tight or spasming muscles
-
Increasing blood flow to injured tissues, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients needed for healing
-
Reducing inflammation and swelling
-
Preventing muscle atrophy when muscles are not being used normally
-
Re-educating muscles after injury so they activate properly again
-
Improving range of motion and flexibility
-
Strengthening weakened or inactive muscles
Why We Often Use E-Stim With Chiropractic Adjustments
When joints are restricted or misaligned, surrounding muscles often become tight, inflamed, or protective. Electrical stimulation helps relax these muscles and reduce pain, which can make chiropractic adjustments more comfortable and more effective.
By calming the muscles and improving circulation before or after an adjustment, E-Stim helps the body hold adjustments better and recover faster.
What to Expect During Treatment
Most E-Stim sessions last 10–15 minutes and are often performed alongside other therapies such as chiropractic adjustments, stretching, or therapeutic exercises. The intensity is always adjusted to a comfortable level for each patient.
Many patients report feeling less tension, reduced pain, and improved mobility after treatment.
